Hooked up my external hd and my comp wont read it

I just moved into my new place n i am setting up all of my electronics. i hooked up my external hd and my comp wont read it. It usually takes a long time to read but now it wont pop up at all. plz help i have very important info that i need to access. I have an HP pavilion desk top and I've had the HD for so long i honestly forget what brand it is.

Did you try a second USB port?

yes, i tried every port on my tower.
