Blank destop problem

Hello,

I am using acer laptop, windows xp operating system. I used to see pictures in slide show. For getting out of the slide show I pressed an escape button. After that i didnt see any icons or start menu other than arrow key and wallpaper. I didnt have backup on my files. can u help me how to get out of this problem?

Thanks for ur answer ....but I used to restart for more than 4 times...it's not working...is there any possibility to take back up on my files??

What if you start in safe mode?
