Hi,
You may retrieve your messages (SMS) by restoring your Google Drive backup on another Android phone. Before doing so, make sure the device that you'll use to restore the backup doesn't have important data - back them first otherwise.
If those messages are from an app like WhatsApp, you may retrieve them by restoring the backup of that app - it should be saved on your Google account. Install WhatsApp on another device, then restore your backup from Google Drive.
If you think that you've a local backup (WhatsApp only) follow these steps:
From your phone's file explorer, find the WhatsApp folder and go to Databases. If by chance there are files named "msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12", rename the backup to restore to "msgstore.db.crypt12" and reinstall WhatsApp to restore it.
