Note book on a loop now repairing drive

Hi

After being stuck for hours on a blue screen after installing and uninstalling updates for Windows 8.1, my laptop is scanning and repairing drive (C:). Does that mean my files are pretty much gone?

Perhaps. One method is to remove the hard drive and use a USB hard drive adapter to change it to an external disk. Then use a 2nd computer to copy the data. Another method is to try using a Linux bootable CD to copy the files to another drive. Linus sometimes will read a drive that Windows can't.
