Hello nati,
Firstly, go to Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View tab Select - Show hidden files, folders, and drives
Uncheck - Hide empty drives in the Computer folder
Uncheck - Hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck - Hide protected operating system files
That will give you the option to make "System Volume Information" visible.
If that doesn´t help you, try to plug your external hard drive to different ports of your computer or even another PC.
You might also want to check the USB cable because it could be damaged.
