External HDD is RAW after reinstall Vista 64

Hello,
During reinstalling MS Vista I left the second external HDD connected to the computer via an USB.
After booting the "newly installed Vista" the extrenal HDD is not reconized in exlorer.
I can find te external HDD via control panel > computer management ect.
The exrenal drive even got a letter but the "status " is RAW.

I am sugested to format the HDD to get access to this drive.
But then all my data are lost!!
How do I recover the data from this a raw external HDD,
and secondly is it common that the MFT of a connected extrenal HDD get lost even when the data in the different partition on the internal HDD are preserved??
Please help me.

You just have to connect your external HDD to another computer, Preferably windows XP and make a backup of all your data.. then format the HDD on your vista pc then get all your data on your HDD again from the XP pc.

thnx Doe12 for your quick response.
But the other xp-computer sees the external HDD also as RAW in "disk management".
