Screen is darkened after not turning it on for a while

Hello,
My screen is darkened after not turning it on for a while. If I let a movie play over and over again for 2-3 days it eventually brightens up. That is until I turn it off. If I turn it of and then turn it on, the screen is darkened again.
How can I fix it ?

Hardware fails! How old is it? Did you recently experience a lightning storm?
