Bios not accessible when hard drive is attached.

I have been using an hp 1000 notebook for the past 3 years now.
Recently, when using the pc, everything totally froze and an "end process" dialogue opened at random places on the desktop. Restarting did not work, so i tried to install a new window, but i found out that the bios is not accessible either.

So i took out the hard drive, to my surprise, the bios was accessible. Put the hard drive back again, no bios.
Please let me know how i can fix this problem.
And if the hard drive is redeemable, as i have so much data on it that i didnt get the time to back up. I am very much worried.
