Hi Ted,
You could try to fix the missing boot device by following these steps:
1. Restart the laptop
2. Enter the BIOS while booting
3. Go to the BOOT menu
4. Check if the hard drive is listed
5. Set the HDD as a first boot device in the boot priority
6. Press the respective key for saving the settings and restart
Hope I gave you an idea.
