Are you talking about an external drive, or an internal one. If it's an internal HDD, is it the OS drive (the one with Windows), or a secondary storage drive? Do you have data which you need to recover?
Usually when an HDD prevents the computer from booting (be it external or internal one) it might mean that it's on its way to fail, or another problem might be at hand.
I'd recommend that you give a try with a different port and a different cables (if it's an internal drive try it with different SATA cables - both power and data), to see if the problem still persists.
You could give it a try with a different computer as well, to see if the same thing happens
