Remove USB device or memory card from USB port

Hello,
When clicking on the icon in the bottom ribbon it no longer displays information in the popup to determine if the device has stopped working and is safe to remove from the USB port or the SD card port?? Have no idea why it is no longer working and how to get it back again.
