Lost pictures on hard drive

Hello,
my problem is that i bought a new external hard drive and i cut an pated all my pictures in to it an then i read the instructions and the 3 step was to format hard drive big mistake...Is there any way i can retrieve them??

you can use a recovery software

then recover all the files
