My laptop turns on but the screen stays black? Any ideas please?

I have a Hp laptop.. it hasn't been dropped in anyway, so I am doubting that the screen in damaged etc..
But when I turn it on, the fan starts up, the power button light turns on and the CD drive opens as normal, but I get no picture on the screen. It's just black.
I have searched other forums, and tired unplugging, removing battery and holding power button for 30 seconds - nothing. I have also tried plugging into tv, but that's no working either.
Any other suggestions before I take it to have someone look at it?

This could be either a problem with:
1. screen backlight
2. inverter that supplies power to the backlight
3. data/power cable from motherboard to screen
4. power supply circuit on the motherboard

None of these things can be fixed by the average home user. I suggest you find a qualified repair shop and have them give you an estimate.
