My WD Passport 0730 is showing up a CD Drive H: after clicking on it it give me H;\ drive is not accessible.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
After initial plugging it gives a clicking sound as well for some time and then only light keeps flickering

Could any one tell me what is the problem? Is it related to hardware! can I resolve it myself or need data recovery personnel to solve it.

Hi mumbaivikings

Unfortunately, a clicking hard drive normally indicates fatal hardware failure. Data on the hard drive would (normally) only be retrievable by consulting a data recovery specialist where they can dismantle your hard drive in a "clean room" environment. The cost of this is always very expensive. Hopefully you have made a backup of your important data.

HI Brian,

Thanks for your reply and that were lies my fear factor.. Its a very important data and I don't have any backup of the same. Do you have any idea about how much data recovery cost and whether data really gets recover.

Hi mumbaivikings,

Unfortunately the cost depends on where you live and what company you .

There is a possible alternative, but it doesnt work often. You would need to purchase an identical hard drive - I dont mean a WD Passport 0730, but when you remove the casing (not an easy job in itself) there is a hard drive inside the casing. It is that bit that needs to be bought. Having an identical drive is not the whole answer - it needs also to have the same firmware installed on the curcuit board - something you cant see by just looking. When you have these then you need to remove the curcuit board from them both (you might need to buy a tool for this job as well - a very small torx driver) and swap them. Only if you are VERY lucky when you connect the "repaired" drive to a computer (you might need a new caddy to install it in to, or may need to install it internally to a desktop machine), then you MIGHT be able to retrieve your data. I have had success with this in about 2 % of the drives I have ever tried to fix so it isnt reliable by any means. However, the good news is that even if this fails you could still take the drive to a data recovery specialist to get the data back. I should mention though that it is not always possible for them to retrieve the data, and you would still be left with a hefty bill.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. It would be nice to hear back from you to see how you got on.
