Koo is an Indian micro-blogging platform based in Bangalore, India. Discussion on the app is focussed on Indian Thoughts. Koo functions in a similar way to Twitter, however, Koo allows users to write in several Indian languages. Instead of Tweets, Koo allows users to post and interact with messages called "koos".

Koo is gaining in popularity because of the Indian government's disagreement with Twitter, with the former demanding that Twitter takes down certain accounts it claimed were spreading fake news (from BBC News).

What are the key features of Koo?

• Personalized profile: Everyone can customize their profile with up to 10 profile photos and write a short bio.
• Multi-language: Koo has been built to drive digital inclusion. Hence, users can simultaneously post in several world languages, and everyone will be able to see their post in their native language or use the translation feature to read comments. Of course, many of the different Indian languages are supported so that everyone in India can use Koo.
• Express yourself: You can write posts up to 500 characters containing photos (up to 10), videos (up to 512 MB), GIFs, and hyperlinks and tag other profiles to connect with people. Also, you can edit posts, and post polls are available to collect opinions and create interesting discussions.

In 2021 Robert Baptiste, a French cybersecurity expert, found that Koo is leaking some users' personal data, such as marital status, email address, date of birth, etc. In reply, Koo stated, “Users enter their profile data on the app to be shared with others on the platform… While there have been false allegations of a data leak, it’s just commonly called the public profile page for all users to view”.

As with any website, be careful what personal data you share, and only do so if you are comfortable with other people potentially having access to it and sharing it.

Koo currently supports and plans to provide support for 19 local languages. Notably Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, and Marathi.
