Unable to download file to external hard drive

I have just bought a 1tb external hard drive and set up all downloads be saved on there and when I try and download a 16gb image my laptop saying not enough memory to carry out the download ?? I need help as I am at a loss thanks in advance

When you download, before going to the External drive, the file must go though your HD, hence the message from your laptop.

16gb is extremely large for one file, the image must be comparable in size to a billboard on Piccadilly Circus. You could not view it all on a laptop screen.

Try to have the image reduced in size.
