Mac computer intermittently seeing external CD drive

Hi,

Can anyone offer a suggestion to solve this; my mac computer only sees the external
CD drive and the CD in it if I switch it off and in again. It then sees the CD in it and I can rip that CD. However, when I change CDs it then doesn't see the new CD and to make it do so, I have to turn the computer on and off again. Same happens with the iPod.

Can anyone suggest why this might be and how to solve it.

It's possible the cable needs to be replaced.
