Does audio fail while camera continues to work?

I have an older Logitech webcam. Up till a couple of weeks ago the microphone/audio/voice worked wonderfully. But, it has quit. However the video continues same as usual.

So, is it common for the microphone to fail while the video cranks along?

I think you are falling victim to planned obsolescence. Go to the webcams site, and see if they have archived in the drivers and such into support, and download and install again. I see this happen with older driver and such, you just have to manually patch them back in.
