It is probably working correctly, just mis-configured. The configuration has told it to go dim.
Perhaps when battery gets below 50% it goes dim. Perhaps if it is even on battery it goes dim. Does it go bright when not on battery?
I can't google your laptop manual for you if you don't tell us what it is..... details details.
