Hello, there is a setting on Facebook that allows you to turn off your active status. Doing so, other users would not be able to see if you were online or not.
It seems that your friend has enabled this setting - you cannot disable this from your side. Even if you are talking with them "live" and they are responding straight away - you won't see them as being active.
