Recovery Discs

Hello,
Well my question is about the Recovery Discs you create when you buy a new computer. What would happen if i used a XP recovery discs to a different computer that has Vista? I have had nothing but problems with the Vista computer that i have had for 2 years, and the recovery discs from xp computer are from a Sony also.
Are these recovery disc able to load everything, if i was to format my computer and start from scratch??
If i format my computer and start from scratch do i need to buy windows vista OS from store? Or am i able to use recovery discs to give my computer a OS?
