Cannot see active friends when messenger app installed

Hi there, I’ve started having problems that I cannot see any active status of friends on messenger when the messenger app is installed. My own active status is switched on, so that it s not the problem. When I delete the messenger app and go onto messenger through the Facebook app, I CAN see friends active status. As soon as I install the messenger app however, I cannot see anybody’s active status. I’ve tried logging out of both Facebook and Messenger, uninstalling both, updating my phone, switching in and off again, re-installing the apps again, making sure my active status is on, but nothing seems to resolve this issue. 
Any ideas would be really helpful.
