you cannot record and listen at the same time.

yes, you can do it on mu windows Vista basic Sony vaio laptop.
So! if you are using Vista basic then
1. Connect microfone/Guitar out put directly to mic (Red/Pink colored adapter)
2. right click on spearker icon in system tray (available at right bottom or screen) Or go to ControlPanel -> Sounds
3. Select Playback tab. you will see Speaker/HP with tick mar on it.
4. Rightclick on the Speaker/Hp and select properties.
5. It opens in new window. Select LEvels tab and increase the Microphone level
you are done!
