Pressing camera button does not work on Whatsapp

Pressing the camera icon next to the text field in whatsapp to initiate a video note does not work; it merely brings up a square image of a camera icon and the word "Camera" (see screenshot). I have gone through all the recommended steps. Updated iOS and app numerous times. All permissions granted. Deleted and reinstalled several times; restarted the phone several times. I have gone through every step on every website I can find dealing with the issue numerous times. Hardware is iPhone 12 Pro. It seems like something is specifically wrong with my phone. Whatsapp, by the way, refuses to help with this issue and sends an automated response that they do not provide help with media. Apple support also does not help.
