Problem with Internet on laptop DELL Closed

Hello,
i recently (last week) bought a laptop from Dell.  like it but for the life of me cannot figure how to get on the Inernet with it.  it has XP.
i am on internet at my office and would prefer to operate anything i would need to do through that line, but i dont see any particular reason to network them, unless i absolutely have to do so.
my home computer is also a Dell, but has that @#$@ Vista, which i am still learning.
what do i have to do.  it says it is supposed to be "internet ready" but since i dont understand all the tenical words (someone could makea  fortune with an understandable glossary) could someone please help me and tell how to do this, so i too can sit in a coffee house and play with my new toy?  thanks.

hi,

make sure you have internet connection at your place.

contact your phone operator to check if you can connect to internet via your phone cable or if they should come to establish a connection.

then you should be able to connect to the internet.
