laptop to tv hdmi Closed

Hello,
hey i tried connecting my Toshiba laptop to my sharp flat screen TV with my hdmi cable and when i plug it into my computer both screens go black... So i tried to shut the comp off then turn it back on and it comes up on the screen with the loading screen then right when it gets to the log in screen both go black again can someone please give me a hand with my problem

Have a Toshiba A105 modelwith XP professional, . the monitor or TV should be attached to the laptop before turning the laptop on,, mine will then default to the Monitor/TV.    Sometimes you must go into control panel/ display/ then change the display.    Try having the TV hooked up prior to booting first.  Then with hooked up if TV is not showing, go to control panel.
