PS3 Network Games Closed

Can PS3 network games be played without a mic and headset? I have an 11 year-old, and am concerned about other older gamers' language.

I am sorry but if you don't want to have sound from the game, 

Just set all game volumes on low

all ps3 games can be played without a mic, however if the mics not turned on the other players mics will come through the tv, so you would have to turn down the tv volume or mute the ppl on the mics.
