Hello,

I recently got a dell optiplex gx270 from a friend with everything except a hdd.
I had a UPC/NTL/Chorus recorder box with a 160GB hdd inside so I put that in to the PC and connected it up and set the jumper 2 away from the ide cable. When I go into the BIOS I’m pretty sure that everything is set correctly as the HDD is set to the primary and 160GB shows up. The problem is when I try to boot off the cd to install XP I get the error message “strike F1 to retry” and it does nothing I even changed the cd drive and its still the same. Can any one help I really don’t know what to do…
Is there a problem with the HDD it has 40pin (ide)and 4 pin(jumper) and power
Thanks in Advance.. Liam

have you set the cdrom as boot device.

you need to go into bios and set the boot order so that the cdrom is before the hdd.

what you need to do is set the jumper on the hdd to master. normally the ones closest to the data cable - furthest from the power cable.

is this the only item on the cable?

set the hdd to master and any others to slave.

are we sure that the cd is infact bootable?

what happens if you disconnect the hdd and try booting the pc with the cd in the drive
