Hello can you give a little more information?
1. to what do you connect?
2. if it is a lan network, is there an internet connection available?
3. do you use a cable or wireless connection

ok, go to your friends pc do this
(start/run/cmd enter)
(windows key and R together will also bring up the run box, just type cmd and press enter/return)
type ipconfig ,
press enter
this will display something similar to this
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
D:\Documents and Settings\Dave>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
D:\Documents and Settings\Dave>
go to your pc and type ipconfig in the dos window.
compare details with your friends pc.
if they are similar, in that the subnet mask and default gateway are the same and the ip address is almost the same except for last digit, try this command
ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx fill in his ip address.)
it should come back with a result with 0% loss
then try pinging the default gateway the same way.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if you get 0% response on both pings then you need to reset your lan.
Shut down all computers
power off your router, and modem.
wait 30 seconds or so, power up your modem .....wait ....wait 30 seconds or so for your modem to go thru its self test etc. when all the lights are on, that should be on, go to your friends computer and boot up, once booted test internet connection.
if ok, boot your computer up, test internet connection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your ip details are different in the dos windo than your friends,
you will need to set your wireless card details to the same except for the end set of digits on the ip address.
so for example, if your friends details were as follows
ip address 192.168.1.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1
then you need to change your ip details to
ip address 192.168.1.3
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1
then apply settings.
test connection.
go thru the process as previously stated to test connections to the default gateway and your friends computer.
Ping both ip addresses from dos window.
if pings are ok, then you will need to do the LAN shut down startup procedure as stated above.
if all that fails, then get back to us and we'll have another think.
hope it helps.
