Tried to reinstall windows xp home edition

Hello,
I have a dell computer, not sure what type or anything got it from a friend, well i tried to reinstall windows xp home edition. well like when it got to installing software or whatever it said Fatal error something about not having the right i/o device or something.. so now my computer just keeps trying to repeat that one step.. and wont let me get into the computer at all...and the disc is clean and everything. but now the computer wont let me reboot it, with the f2 or the f12 key or anything so i'm so i dont know what to do. I had a friend tell me i need to wipe the hard drive. but id ont know how to do that either.. Someone plz help me<code><gras>Configuration:
