My Laptop loses its deskop

Hello,
My laptop keeps losing its desktop icons. When i use the task manager, desktop contents are displayed in some dialogue box. When i click on a folder it opens but empty. When i save these folders on a flash and open them on another laptop, they open properly with their contents.Whats the problem and how do i go about it?
