Messenger list shows email not username

Hello,
any ideas why some people have usernames showing up on my messenger list, and others, whom i have chatted with, come up as their full email addresses. just curious really.

hi there,

right click on each contact and edit

then add name to it

ok but why does it do that- change from a username to an email address? im referring to my personal contacts whom i chat with
