Hello,

My grandmother gave me her old computer and it is loaded with viruses and spyware and junk.

I want to reinstall windows xp but the reinstallation CD is XP home and the cpu has XP pro.

The product key on the side of the CPU doesn't work, neither does the one on the CD.

The CD is brand new and had never been opened.

Ive also tried to reinstall from the i386/ winnt32 folder on the C drive, but get the message "setup cannot continue because the version of windows that is currently installed is newer than the one on the cd" (of course there is no cd in the cdrom, I assume thats a generic message). When I hit cancel, I get a "internal Error 2356.Data1.cab" message....

Now what?

I'll answer it myself....

Seeing as how the cpu was a Dell, I went to their online Tech chat, and the tech informed me that Dell could send me a replacement OEM copy of XP for $10.99 (us) plus shipping and handling.
