The data is on the hard disk but cant read it

Hello,
I have a seagate freeagent HDD. I configured it using windows and transferred all the data using windows machines. Today, i plugged the HDD to a mac and copied some more data into it. After extracting it from mac, i plugged the HDD back to a windows machine.
I cannot see the files which were on the disk before nor can i see the files i copied from mac. I know the files are present in the hdd because the used space is quite a lot. I dont have any drive conflicts and can see the device when i click on My Computer.
The HDD now has four files which can be seen. Namely, System volume information, . trashes, ._.trashes and .DS_Store. None of these files are bigger than a few kb.
Please help me access my data again using a windows machine.

Macs and PCs use a different file system. Both can read/write FAT32 Partitions - which you should have used. No telling what state your hard drive is in at this point. You might be able to use some type of recovery software to restore the Windows Partition that your Mac removed. You can try this one:

Thanks a lot. I tried chkdsk <drive>: /f from the command prompt and it worked :)
But what can i do now so that I dont face the same issues again.
