Open an .EXE, computer asks what with. XP

Hello,

Yesterday Avast ran a scan to try and delete the XP 2010 Security thingy virus. When I tried to use the computer today, every single .EXE on the computer seems to have been deleted. I can't open iTunes, Skype or anything like that. I couldn't get Solitaire to run until I searched for the .EXE in SYSTEM32 and right clicked -> start. Otherwise, it just asks what sort of program I want to open it with.

I was wondering if there was a way to fix this without using a system restore and perhaps bringing that virus back.

I managed to do a System Restore by loading Safe Mode, but it fixed nothing.

I can no longer get System Restore or any EXE to do anything.
