I see you posted this problem on the 8th of Feb. I have the exact same problem on the same machine that just happened last night. I don't have the "recovery CD" either (quite honestly I don't remember ever being prompted to make one with this system when I first got it). Did you ever get this resolved and if so how?

HP advise use that.......saying, it is not possible restore ...if C was overwriten with other OS, as there was some files need it for recovery, therefore get restore CD from 3-party vendor, as they no more longer support XP per agreement with microsoft.
