Hello Tricia,
The sources of the problem can be numerous.
First, although if you have a black screen can you open the task manager? (alt+ctrl+del) If you can, at least we will know it is not a video card problem.
You also may the victim of a virus, but that is to be seen later.
You may need to insert your XP disk, reboot your system and choose the repair option.
If none of the above work, you may have a hardware problem: motherboard, video card
