My friend got the blue screen while booting XP up once. so he changed his HD with an older XP one and it worked fine. Later he asked for help with installing the audio driver and when i moved the case forward to get to the ports the whole computer shut down and there was smoke. Turns out he didnt screw in the HD and it shorted on the case and is now fried. Since then weve tried two HDs with XP loaded on them and one with vista loaded on it but they all go to a blue screen while boot up. Weve also tried both IDE and SATA harddrives. I cant read the blue screen because it just flashes and then restarts. Is it possible that the short damaged the CPU or the MOBO so that it cant boot windows? PS the BIOS works fine and has no errors.

Hello,

1. Sata drives can't work with XP.
2. There is a blue screen because : BCD (for Vista) is not installed, and there is also a blue screen because (maybe) is not the same XP version (drivers, service packs etc...)

Solution :

Mount an IDE Hard Drive, and then, Reinstall Windows XP with the XP CD

All will work fine !
