Error: Cant Load Operating System

My friends Sony Laptop VGN-NS140D has a problem. When i boot up it says error loading operating system. I downloaded Ultimate Boot CD and it informs me that there is NO hard drive found...It tells me to check cables, drive power connection and Jumper settings and this is where i need help....can anyone give me detailed instructions to do this please.

You will find that advice is only good for desktop computers. Laptops often don't have power or data cables to the hard drive. I suspect you have a failed hard drive that needs to be replaced. I would take the laptop to a good repair shop.
