COMPAQ LAPTOP:battery backup

Hello all,I am having a compaq laptop which is of 3yrs old.Earlier it was working fine,but now a days it is showing some trouble with battery.It is not at all giving battery backup .When power supply turned off it directly shut down automatically and not giving time to shut it down nomally.What could be the reason?

After 3 years the battery may need replacement.
