my laptop was pulled down off of my dresser onto the floor by a 1 year old child....it will boot and you can faintly see what is on the screen, the screen just will not light up like before it was dropped.....any suggestions to fix this and fast without costing an arm and a leg?

sounds nasty.
1 either your backlight has gone on the screen,
2 the screen cable hase come loose,
3 or there are some keys that you can press to get the brightness back again
Option 1 expensive
option 2 need to find someone amongst your friends who has experience of dismantling laptops, they can delve inside your laptop to reseat the connections. Otherwise, need to take to local tech repair.
Option 3 we need to know make and model of laptop for this one.
there is are usualy 2 keys marked with light bulbs, usualy about the middle of the function keys (F keys) these keys pressed along with another key marked Fn will (hopefully) raise or lower the brightness.
Option 4 - household insurance may cover this. if you have new for old, may be worth the try if the other options are not viable.
