Laptop and pc

hey i have a laptop and a pc,
and i was wondering if i can connect them both to the same moden, the modem itself has 4 places to connect a cord to plug into the computer, i was wondering if i would matter if i put two in, i have already done it but im not sure if it was cause a charge or anything

any help would be great thanks (:

If the modem has a built-in router then connecting multiple computers should not be a problem.
