Hi,
I don't know why your PC shuts down too, but I know that there's kind of shut down function in iTunes - found it on the Apple Homepage.
But, I'd suggest to remove iTunes, QuickTime and Apple Mobile Device from your PC and re-install iTunes after-wards, this fixes most problems (Quick Time and the Mobile Device will be automatically re-installed with iTunes). Hope it helps.
