Laptop DC Charger input?

Hello,
I have a Gateway computer & can't get it to charge? I've tried removing battery & plugging in & nothing happens? I fear that it's the actual input port for the charger?? Can this even be fixed or do I have to trash it & get a new Laptop?? Any help/advice is appreciated!
