Enter key does not work

Hello,

In MS Word, if I type a word and hit the enter key, it will not move to the next line. And, any keys I use are entered as numbers: Example99992222983

Earlier, I used Alt/Ctrl/Del to try to reboot because XP was locked. Didn't work. So I shut down the computer and restarted. I noticed that only numbers could be entered in logon (I got around that by clicked on "logon".) How do I get the Enter key to go to the next line and stop typing numbers?

(I'm writing this from my Mac, because I can't use Windows XP. )
