I have an Acer Aspire 5050 that keeps freezing up at startup. I had a bad harddrive and originally thought that was the only problem. I just installed a new harddrive and am still having the same problem. I tried changing the ram out with memory from another laptop that I know is working well and I still have the same property (it was even twice the amount of memory). I was able to get xp pro to install once on the harddrive but once I tried to put a different version of windows on I couldn't get through the setup.
It doesn't seem to be overheating. The computer worked before the harddrive went on it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was having the same freezing problem on the same model Acer. I even went as far as a clean install on a new drive, and it would freeze during the gui portion of the setup. It ended up being the battery that was the problem. The very second that I pulled it, the computer began behaving normally again. I don't know if this will help anyone else, but it's what worked for me.
