Computer does not recognize the hard drive

Hello,
This problem is for a friend of mine. He is unable to use his computer he thinks due to a virus. His computer no longer recognizes a hard drive. He does not have an anti virus protection on his computer. I told him to go into Safe Mode is he could and try to run a free virus removal?? He bought another hard drive and receives the same message.

He is using windows xp
