Itunes problem

Hello,
Bit of a tricky one. Basically... Ive burnt half my cd collection to itunes in lossless format, decided the files were to big so made them mp3s to save disc space. but when i delete the old lossless files from itunes they are not going in the recycle bin and the ammount of disk space remains the same. Where are these files and how do i delete them properly??
