Laptop hdmi to tv to sony hdmi media centre

I have hdmi cable sound and picture to hd tv ok tv no optical socket on tv for [sound]?? which is my problem i cannot get it through sony media centre player choice --eg of usb, hdmi ,or audio also problem hdmi overides all the other connectionswas told optocal only works but mytv does not support an optical connectiondoes anyone have an explanation how ti fix the sound only fromtv to media centre without changeing my new 47inch wharefdale hd tv [no optical] picture fine just sound through to media centre from my tv
