I have been having this problem for weeks now on my HP dv2620ca where the red x over the sound icon comes and goes. Some days I will turn on my laptop and the sound will work fine and some days the red x appears with that "No audio output device installed" I feel I have tried everything: reinstalled My HD connexant audio driver when it appeared, updated it, checked BIOS see is sound was enabled, tried restoring it to the earliest point which didn't work I talk to HP twice who said its probably a software problem from an update. Please HELP! What else can I do before restoring it to factory settings which possibly might not work?

Hello,

Try this 1.

Check the "Window Audio" service.

Click on Start --> In search box, type services.msc and press "Enter".

Services windows will be opened. Now scroll down for "Windows Audio".

Make sure its status is "Started". If its not started then to change its status,

double-click on "Windows Audio" --> Set "Startup type:" to "Automatic" and click

on "Start" --> Click on OK.

If the problem still exists then

Click on the below link and select your "Operating System"

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3550037&

1) Update the BIOS by downloading the file from the manufacture website.

2) Download the "Chipset" and "Audio" drivers.

Install the "Chipset" drivers first and then the "Audio drivers".

Good Luck.

Hello,

I've been having this problem as well. It's driving me crazy 'cause I feel like I tried everything just as you did.

I've also followed your advice Jack4Rall, but I'm afraid it didn't work.

Could it possibly be a Sound Card error? I'm not sure if the Sound Card could get damaged in anyway even without tinkering with the laptop.

I'm on a Pavillion dv9700 Entertainment System and I've had that dreaded red X for a while now.

Rodem, does your sound come and go like mine? Sometime after I turn my comp back on the sound will work perfectly. But usually im getting that awful red X. Hp said its probably not a hardware issue because my sound still works sometimes. Maybe I have some corrupted files that are preventing it from being read by my comp. I trieions d reintalling the device but it says "No MEDIA can be found" Please help if any of you know further suggestions. Thanks

I haven't damaged my computer or anything. The problem seemed to come out of nowhere. One day I turned my laptop on and there was that red x, I thought I muted my volume at first, but much to my dismay that wasn't the case.

I still am having the same problem guys. I even went as far as restoring it back to factory settings and the red x still was there. Do you think there's a problem with the motherboard and if so is their an option for me to buy an external sound card or try to open up the notebook myself. Please help me if you can. Thanks

Hi pat,

Wipe your hard disk with another installation disk of windows deleting all created partitions on it,then use recovery cd and restore everything to factory settings, still if same issue then probably you need to change motherboard, get a usb sound card from a friend plug to laptop and see if it solves the issue,

Wish you good luck

Unfortunately, I am in a foreign country teaching and left the recovery disc back in California. I doubt another factory restore will do the trick. Right now as ive already tried many times before am downloading the driver in hopes for it to come back. But sadly, no pun intended, you are probably right and my motherboard has a problem with the sound card. Its strange to because it happened out of nowhere. I didn't damage my notebook or anything. One day i turned on the comp and the red x was there. Since then the sound would come back ever so often and work fine but lately nothing at all. I appreciate the help sadgurl.
